Vandar® Thermoplastic polyester blends
Processing: Vandar is supplied in plastic or multiwall bags. Before processing, the material should be dried to achieve optimum moulded-part properties. The moisture content of virgin material and regrind to be processed should not exceed 0.02%. Higher moisture contents lead to hydrolytic degradation of the melt and to a deterioration in the mechanical properties, particularly toughness, of the moldings. The processing machine feed hopper should be closed during the processing operation; heating the hopper can be an advantage.
Structure Vandar is a series of extremely impact-resistant thermoplastic polyester blends. Despite modification the rigidity even of the unreinforced types is relatively high. For applications demanding greater rigidity the best suited type of glass-fiber reinforcement or other techniques are used.
Properties The semi-crystalline, impact-resistant modified polyester blends are characterized by the following qulities:
- high impact and notched impact resistance, also at low temperatures
- high heat resistance, especially in the glass-fibre reinforced grades (operating temperature up to 120°C)
- high resistance against organical solvents, fuels, lubricants and brake fluids
- high abrasion resistance
- good processability
- paintability
Main Advantages of Vandar compared to
polycarbonate: Vandar offers greater resistance to solvents, which is of great importance in the area of molded parts that are exposed to fuels or cleaning agents.
high-impact resistant polyamide: Vandar has a higher dimensional stability owing to its low moisture absorption. This means that break stress, break elongation, module of elasticity and impact resistance remain practically uneffected.
Grades Ticona offers a comprehensive Vandar assortment: Besides unreinforced and glass-fiber reinforced grades there are others equipped with flame retardation or special grades for the manufacture of airbag covers.
Applications Vandar is applied exclusively for injection-molding procedures. Airbag covers made of Vandar are part of the standard safety equipment in today’s automobile. The good impact-resistance, also at low temperatures, is of use for further applications: Ski bindings, farming machine parts, suitcase shells, transporting boxes.
