Impet® PET

Processing
Impet PET is supplied in plastic or multiwall bags. Before processing, the material should be dried to achieve optimum molded-part properties. The moisture content of virgin material and regrind to be processed should not exceed 0.01%. Higher moisture contents lead to hydrolytic degradation of the melt and to a deterioration in the mechanical properties, particularly toughness, of the moldings. The processing machine feed hopper should be closed during the processing operation; heating the hopper can be an advantage.

Structure
Impet PET is Ticona’s trade name for injection-mold fit thermoplastic polyesters produced on the basis of polyethylene terephthalate.Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is produced by melt polycondensation of terephthalic acid or terephthalic acid dimethyl ester with ethylene glycol.

Properties
Impet PET has the following properties:

  • high rigidity and hardness
  • very good creep properties
  • paintable surface
  • high heat deflection temperature (HDT/A up to 228°C)
  • operating temperature up to 150°C
  • favorable sliding behavior
  • very good electric, good dielectric properties
  • high chemical-resistance and weather-resistance

Grades
In order to further enhance the good mechanical properties of PET, all Impet PET types are equipped with glass-fiber reinforcement in type-specific varying concentrations.

Applications
Being a high-performance engineering polymer, Impet PET is favored for technical parts that are subject to heavy strain. Due to its excellent flow qualities, complicated and thin-walled injection-mold parts are easy to produce. Its main areas of application are in electrical engineering, in electronics, in machine construction, and in the automobile industry. Its advantageous sliding and wear qualities compared to other glass-fiber reinforced thermoplastics opens up a wide range of application possibilities for Impet PET in precision mechanics, such as cogwheels, bearings, cams, angle plates, clutches, lock parts etc.

The outstanding rigidity and the extreme creep resistance of Impet PET are decisive in the machine construction area: chains, rollers, molded valve parts, pump casings and pulleys are a few examples.
