Fortron® PPS

Processing
The preferred method of processing for Fortron PPS is injection molding. Extrusion of mono- and multifilaments, solid rods, sheets and pipes is also possible.

Structure
Fortron PPS is a linear, semi-crystalline polyphenylene sulphide. A phenylene ring and a sulphur atom form the backbone of this macro molecule, lending Fortron PPS a series of outstanding characteristics.

Properties
Unreinforced PPS possesses a comparably medium heat resistance. Adding glass fibres and glass fibre/mineral mixtures allow the heat distortion temperature and the strength of Fortron PPS to be attained. The following properties give Fortron PPS its high performance polymer characteristics:

  • operating temperatures up to 240°C, temporarily up to 270°C
  • inherently flame retardant (UL 94:V-0, partly 5 VA)
  • very good chemical and oxidation resistance
  • high hardness and rigidity
  • very low water absorption
  • good creep resistance even at high temperatures

Grades
Fortron PPS is offered as powder or pellets. By the addition of glass fibers and glass fiber/mineral mixtures the unreinforced Fortron's PPS rigidity and solidity as well as its heat resistance are substantially increased. The product range encompasses grades for extrusion and injection molding that differ in regard to melt viscosity. Very easy flowing grades are available for thin-walled molded parts with unfavorable flow path/wall-thickness ratios. The powder types allow for a wide variety of applications in powder engineering methods, for example as heat resistant binding agent or as an additive in PTFE compounds. The unreinforced pellet grades are mainly used in fiber production and for special applications in extrusion processing.

Applications
Fortron PPS is a well-qualified material for the manufacture of mechanically and thermally highly stressed molded parts. Main areas of application are the automotive industry (eg. air suction systems, water and fuel pumps, valves, seals, components for exhaust feedback systems) as well as the electric/electronic engineering sector (eg. plugs and connector straps, coil bobbins, relays parts, switches, encapsulation of condensators, transistors and lamp sockets). In machine construction and precision engineering Fortron PPS is also deployed for various components.

Fortron PPS contains a very low proportion of ion contamination giving it an advantage over other materials for electronic applications. For many kinds of molded parts subject to a high degree of stress Fortron PPS will be the better alternative compared to lightmetal alloys, thermosets and many other thermoplastics. Unfilled Fortron PPS is developed for high tenacity filaments, fibers and nonwovens in textiles and automotive industry. Special Fortron PPS powders are available for coating applications.
